Outdoor Adventure Education through Physical Education (OutAdvEd)

OutAdvEd set out to strengthen the place of outdoor adventure education (OAE) within physical education by linking it more closely to teacher education. Its central aim was to build a shared, evidence-informed approach to how OAE can support young people’s social and emotional learning (SEL), and to help teacher training programmes across Europe use it in a more coherent, consistent way. The project responded to Erasmus+ priorities on quality and innovation in higher education, on strengthening teachers’ professional competences, and on promoting inclusive, healthy and active lifestyles through physical education.

Activités

Over two and a half years, the six partner institutions conducted a rapid review of the research literature linking OAE and SEL, held transnational partner meetings and knowledge-exchange workshops, and jointly developed a curriculum framework, a curriculum template, and classroom-ready teaching resources. Pre-service and in-service physical education teachers tested the emerging materials and gave feedback that fed directly into the final teacher’s guide.

Produits

The project produced the Outdoor Adventure Education Curriculum Framework for Youth Social and Emotional Learning (Masaryk University Press, 2025), an accompanying curriculum template, and a Teacher’s Guide with a handbook of ready-to-use OAE activities linked to SEL and physical education learning outcomes (University of Luxembourg, 2025). All outputs are freely available and designed for teacher educators and physical education teachers to use directly in their own practice.

Impacts

OutAdvEd has given teacher educators and physical education teachers in Luxembourg, Greece, the Czech Republic, Spain and Finland a shared, research-based approach and a common set of tools for using outdoor adventure activities to build pupils’ self-regulation, teamwork and social skills. For the partner institutions, the project strengthened international research cooperation on physical education and teacher training; for participating students and teachers, it provided hands-on experience with adventure-based pedagogy that transfers directly into everyday school settings.

Perspectives

The partners plan to keep the project’s resources in active use beyond OutAdvEd itself: the curriculum template and teaching resources are being integrated into partner institutions’ teacher-training courses, and the consortium is exploring further joint publications and follow-up cooperation building on the network created through the project.
